I recognized my love for Jamie Bamber early on in the series of Battlestar Galactica the re-imagined space opera that has…in my opinion put all other television programs on their ear…since the mini aired in early 2003. Apollo, Bamber’s call sign and his brandished symbol within this skeleton military fleet who was first hailed as a spoiled brat sporting a chip on his shoulder was considered forced into service. Bitter and indifferent this “brat” soon turned hero as he battled cylons and clobbered his way to the top as a commanding officer. However unlike most heroes of modern television…this one had deep flaws and Bamber wasn’t ashamed to air them in public at the sacrifice of many a fan boy’s’ musings. “Oh he’s weak, he whines….blah…blah…blah….,” but Jamie’s portrayal of this much loved character was profoundly deep and meaningful to me. My hero was real, gritty and so frakked up…and it was sexy!! Jamie nailed his character with such accuracy it was exhilarating to watch the character, unfold. This is what drew me into the series. He was the strong Captain Apollo who first formed alliances with the newly sworn in President of the Colonies Laura Roslin, who is played by Mary McDonnell. Together, they honed their positions within the fleet and tested the waters only to come along side a treachery that would ultimately divide them. Mary and Jamie together raised the bar on the hotness scale in the sheer electricity of their performances together. Their relationship was also another reason why I stopped mid tracks attempting to fold laundry in the middle of watching an episode and dropped my jaw and linen to the delicious banter that these two engaged in! But wait….there is more…..Apollo being the strong warrior and mighty wielder of power soon found his Achilles heel in the form of his long admired and deeply loved comrade in arms Starbuck (played by Katee Sackhoff) whose reckless and daring behavior both amused and beguiled him forcing him to take challenges from her in both his professional and personal life. She would prove to be his complete and utter undoing which formed a sensual dance of pain, pleasure and denial between the two of them that captivated me from week to week. Their story soon became my main obsession for palpitating in anticipation of every episode airing….their story….one of a great love and sacrifice…it was simply breathtaking. Both Katee and Jamie sizzled during their on screen performances more than any other couple that I can recall in recent TV drama history. They both effectively weaved their performances flawlessly and with such passion that you couldn’t help but become entrenched in their story. Which brings me to why I am here. In November of 2006 I fully realized my obsession with Battlestar Galactica and joined up on the Scifi.com website forums. I made my way into the Jamie Bamber Appreciation Thread showing my deep love for the actor and character that he was portraying. The Bamber Bunnies welcomed me with open arms and was so accepting and entertaining with their Apollo art and Lee banter….it was a proud moment for me to be accepted into this wonderful circle of friends. But soon I became restless as while I was online many of the bunnies were usually deep in slumber leaving me alone and talking to myself…therefore I found my way into the Apollo/Starbuck Shipper thread. I soon took up residence in that thread and made it my home….which now in reality is why I am referred to as the Rogue Bamber Bunny. My heart will always be with the Bunnies but my home lies in the Apollo/Starbuck thread. I also play in the Laura/Lee shipper thread as well…..because I cannot deny the amount of chemistry that Jamie and Mary have in their roles together. As for me…I am an art and computer teacher at two local elementary schools. I am happily married… to a man for 17 years ….who truly supports my BSG Jamie/Katee/Mary obsessions. I have 3 beautiful children who are amazing and have changed my life for the better. My middle son Joshua is severely handicapped which makes for a difficult life and much house confinement….thus another reason why BSG and the Sci-fi boards have been such an important part of my life. It allows me to escape into a delicious fantasy world with characters that I can both identify with and truly love. Upon the announcement that this upcoming season will be the last for BSG has deeply saddened me as I doubt I will ever find such top notch quality entertainment on TV of the same caliber as this show has proven to be. But I do look ahead with much anticipation at what wonderful roles these actors specifically Jamie will pursue in his now well set career! |
